School runs without the scramble

What actually makes a family morning work: fewer decisions, earlier bookings, and a routine children can follow themselves.

The hard part of a school morning is rarely the journey. It is the number of small decisions stacked into twenty minutes while everybody needs something at once.

Move decisions out of the morning

Anything you can decide the night before stops being a decision at 7:40am. Bags by the door. Shoes together. The journey booked, if you know your timing.

Book earlier than feels necessary

The usual mistake is booking at the moment you want to leave. Booking ten minutes earlier turns a rush into a wait, and a wait is a much better problem to have with children.

Give children something to do

A child with a job is a child who is not negotiating. Carrying their own bag, buckling their own belt, watching for the car — small responsibilities make the routine theirs rather than something happening to them.

Keep the same shape each day

Children settle into repetition quickly. The same seat, the same order of events, the same short conversation on the way. It stops being a performance and becomes ordinary, which is the goal.

Allow for the days that go wrong

Some mornings simply come apart. Build a little slack into the plan and those mornings stay ordinary too.
